MIA Positive Case November 29, 2020

November  29, 2020

Dear Parents of Grade 3 (In-Person) Students,

We were made aware of a positive Covid-19 case (in a staff member) at MIA. As per of the Michigan Department of Education guidelines, we have taken action by reporting this information to the Washtenaw County Health Department (WCHD).

In accordance with HIPAA and FERPA laws, health information is private and we will not be disclosing the name of the individual. However, please remember we will always keep the safety of our students and staff at the forefront of our decision-making.

The last date of close contact this individual had with your child was on Wednesday, November 18. Close contacts may be contacted directly by the WCHD. A “close contact” is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of the positive person for at least 15 minutes.  Since your child is instructed in-person, he/she is considered to be a close contact of the positive person.  From the information that we have gathered, it is highly unlikely the infected individual contracted the virus from MIA, as three other family members displayed symptoms of the virus prior to the staff member’s contraction of the virus and also the staff member started manifesting symptoms two days following the last contact with MIA students and staff. The WCHD, however, may conduct a thorough contact tracing investigation to confirm this.

Grade 3 in-person families and the onsite staff were contacted via telephone this evening. Alhamdulilah, although none of the in-person students and other staff affiliated with Grade 3 are exhibiting any Covid-19 symptoms, as a precautionary measure, we will hold online classes for all Grade 3 students this week. We hope to resume in-person instruction on Monday, December 7.  Please know, this quarantine is not because we are having an outbreak of Covid-19 cases within MIA; it is an additional safety precaution taken in accordance with the CDC guidelines and recommendations of the MIA Re-Opening Advisory Committee.

The Health Department must complete their contact tracing investigation for us to determine next steps. Again, we urge all students’ families and staff to fully cooperate with WCHD should they reach out to you. Additionally, if your child or a family member develops Covid-19 symptoms, i.e. fever, cough, congestion, diarrhea, or loss of smell and/or taste, please get tested immediately and notify the school office.

We thank you in advance for your care, understanding, and cooperation.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for doing your part in helping to keep our school community safe!

Sincerely,

Fayzeh Madani, Principal
