What year was MIA built?

Michigan Islamic Academy was first established in 1985. It was located in the Masjid, with students from Kindergarten to Middle School. The current building was added in 1996, and classes were expanded to include the High School. The current expansion program includes a full size gymnasium, state-of-the-art science lab and seven additional classrooms.

How will I know what subjects my child will learn this year?

Michigan Islamic Academy follows the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations for each grade. Each course or grade overview is posted on the MIA website. At Curriculum Night, at the start of each year, Pre-K through 12th grade teachers present parents with a comprehensive overview of what will be taught in the classroom. Hard copies of the subject curriculum can be requested in the school office at any time.

Is MIA accredited?

Michigan Islamic Academy is accredited by AdvancED through the North Central Association. We are recognized by the Michigan Department of Education as a private academic institution.

Are student assessments conducted throughout the year?

Teachers conduct on-going and formal assessments throughout the year. Report cards are issued at the end of each term. Periodical progress reports are also sent to parents. Assessments include running records for reading, rubrics for writing, and formal assessments with math concepts. Additional assessments include portfolios, student projects, and presentations. Students in grades three through nine also take M-Step tests every year. Students in grade 11 take the Michigan Merit Exams (MME).

Is it necessary to schedule an appointment to see the facility and/or talk to the teachers?

Michigan Islamic Academy has a closed campus policy for the safety and security of our children. Tours of our facility should be arranged ahead of time by appointment to avoid a long wait in the office. Parents wishing to schedule an appointment with their child’s teacher can call the school office to make arrangements.

What are the typical class sizes?

We are pleased to offer a low student to teacher ratio. The average class ratio is 16:1 for elementary students and 20:1 for middle and high school students.

Are all students required to wear uniforms?

Pre-K students are not required to wear uniforms. Students in Kindergarten through 12th grade are required to wear uniforms. Uniforms for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade can be purchased from Land’s End and East Essence. Does Michigan Islamic Academy offer extracurricular activities?

MIA offers a variety of extracurricular activities including: Student Government Organization, Elementary boys soccer team, Basketball teams for middle and high school (based on student participation), Newsletter club, Health Club, and the Model United Nations. MIA also offers academic clubs such as National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, and Elementary Honor Society. Please see the Organizations tab for more information.

How can parents get involved?

Michigan Islamic Academy features a flourishing Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) with many opportunities for parents to volunteer and coordinate various projects for the school. A parent may volunteer for specific projects by filling out a volunteer form in the office. Parents may also notify their child’s homeroom teacher or attend PTO meetings to sign up for projects.

How big is the school?

The student population for the 2018-2019 academic year is 260 students.

Michigan Islamic Academy’s campus features a new play ground, conforming to all state regulations and 2 outdoor basketball courts.The new expansion offers a full-size gymnasium with all facilities as well as a a new science lab, and 7 more classrooms. Traverwood Library (5 minutes walking distance) is a state of the art facility, which serves as a useful resource for students and teachers.
